Treachery at Lancaster Gate / Anne Perry.
"Gripping and provocative, the latest Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery by New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry peers unflinchingly into the corrupt affairs of Victorian society on the brink of the century's turn. The world is poised for social and political change, but England holds tight to its traditions, classes, and prejudices. When an explosion in London kills two policemen and seriously injures three more, many believe that anarchists are the culprits. But Thomas Pitt, commander of Special Branch, knows the city's radical groups well enough to suspect that someone with decidedly more personal motives lit the deadly fuse. As he investigates the source of the fatal blast, Pitt is stunned to discover that the bombing was a calculated strike against the ranks of law enforcement. But still more shocking revelations await, as Pitt's inquiries lead him to a member of Parliament hoping for a lucrative business deal, a high-ranking police officer with secrets to keep, and an aristocratic opium addict seeking murderous revenge. As he pursues each increasingly threatening lead, Pitt finds himself impeded at every turn by the barriers put in place to protect the rich and powerful--barriers that, as they start to crumble, threaten to bury him alive."--Provided by publisher.

The latest in Perry's long-running Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series (this is the thirty-first entry) runs true to Perry's formula: showcase a crime that reveals the immense social inequities and tensions of late-Victorian England. Charlotte and Thomas themselves embody the social spectrum: police inspector Thomas came from humble origins, while Charlotte is a Lady. Charlotte's aristocratic roots enable the couple to infiltrate the drawing rooms and ballrooms of the upper crust (the barb-filled dialogue Perry creates between Charlotte and other women is either over the top or delightful, depending on the reader). In the latest, Thomas, now head of the Special Branch of Security, is called to the scene of a London bombing that has killed two policemen and gravely injured three more. Pitt discovers that the police themselves were the targets. Anarchists are first blamed, but suspects come to include an MP and an aristocrat addicted to opium. Perry sometimes seems to graft our own time's fear of terrorism onto the Victorian sensibility here. It remains an entertaining read, but some Perry fans may start to feel like they've heard all this before. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews. - Library Journal Reviews : LJ Reviews 2015 November #1
A bomb goes off in London during a secret police raid, claiming several lives, and Commander Thomas Pitt soon learns that it was not an anarchist attack but a calculated cover-up of murder. British author Perry will speak this month at the inaugural Fort Worth Library Author Series.
