Son of no one Cover Image Book Book

Son of no one / Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Summary:

"In Son of No One, next in the blockbuster The Dark-Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, it's not easy being life's own personal joke, but Josette Landry has made an unstable peace with the beast. Completely down on her luck, Josette takes a job with a local paranormal group as a photographer and camerawoman. Yeah, they're even crazier than she is. The only paranormal thing she believes in is the miracle that keeps her rusted out hoopty running. But when something truly evil is released into the world, they are forced to call in reinforcement. From the moment Josette meets Cadegan, she knows something about him isn't quite right. Mysterious and armed with lethal sarcasm, he seems a lot older than his age. Centuries ago, Cadegan was viciously betrayed into an immortal prison by the only person he'd ever trusted. Forced against his will to do good, he hates everything in life. All he wants is a way out. But for the damned there is only eternal suffering. And yet there is something about Josette that intrigues him. Something he can't seem to fight and the last time he felt this way about a woman, it cost him everything. He knows he has to stay away from her, but the unleashed demon is hellbent on consuming her soul. If one more innocent is taken, he will be sent back to an unimaginable prison that makes his current hell look like paradise. But how can he keep her safe when his being with her is the greatest threat of all?"-- Provided by publisher.

When skeptical Josette Landry is hired to do camerawork for a paranormal reality TV show, she's forced to reassess her idea of reality.Jo has spent her life following the rules, but it hasn't done much for her: Divorcing her cheating husband wiped out her savings, she just lost her job, and her house is in foreclosure. So when her beloved but batty cousin offers her a job filming a haunted New Orleans mansion, she jumps at the chance. Jo knows all her family's supernatural craziness is ridiculous. Apparently, though, not believing in the paranormal doesn't make it untrue, since Jo doesn't even have time to set up her equipment before she's sucked into a gloomy otherworld where creepy malevolent creatures attack her. Convinced she's met her doom, she's stunned when a medieval Welsh knight comes to her rescue, fighting off the monsters then whisking her off to his oddly cozy lair in the otherwise eerie realm. Cadegan has been trapped in a preternatural prison for a thousand years, betrayed by the one person he thought he could trust and banished from human connection. Still, when Jo falls into his cursed domain, he will do everything he can to keep her safe and send her back home, even if it means an eternity of misery. When Jo refuses to leave without him, he begins to hope for a bright future, if he can bring himself to trust the woman he's falling for and who could destroy him forever. Paranormal romance novelist Kenyon continues her Dark-Hunters series, pairing Jo, a courageous modern woman, with Cadegan, an ancient wounded warrior. Engaging and creative, the story unfolds through Kenyon's fast-paced narration and quirky characters, though it's handled with a light gloss that might disappoint readers looking for more depth. A diverting paranormal romance that's less edgy than it seems to want to be. Copyright Kirkus 2014 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.

Kenyon's sixth Hellchaser novel (after Time Untime) pairs up Josette, a photographer whose luck always seems to fail her, and a demon named Cadegan, who has spent the last 1000 years or so being tortured in exile. When Jo falls through a mirror and into Cadegan's prison, he's immediately drawn to her, and the two of them almost immediately fall into bed. From there, the story meanders, with escape attempts from the prison realm, run-ins with various mystical creatures, attempts to rescue other prisoners, and a drawn-out ending that seems to wander past the climax and keep going. While those who are already fans of the series might enjoy reconnecting with dozens of side characters, those new to the world will find themselves overwhelmed by the number of side characters and their familial and mystical connections.
