The angels' share : a Bourbon kings novel / J.R. Ward.

Ward, J. R., 1969- (author.).

Summary:

"In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème la crème of high society--just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discreet staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder...No one is above suspicion--especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between his father and him is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle--as well as with his former horse trainer's daughter. Meanwhile, the family's financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself. Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, on the very brink of the family's demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior...or the worst of all the sinners?"-- Provided by the publisher.

Ward's Baldwine family returns in this fast-paced, dramatic sequel. At the end of The Bourbon Kings (2015), patriarch William's body was found in the Ohio River—an apparent suicide. But the world of the Baldwines isn't always what it seems, and there were plenty of people who wanted him dead. Youngest son Lane discovers numerous irregularities in the Bradford Bourbon Company's accounts, and it seems that the family business is headed for ruin unless immediate action is taken. The other Baldwines have problems of their own—Gin is about to marry an abusive narcissist, Edward suffers physically and mentally from his father's cruelty, and Maxwell's return to the family fold after a lengthy absence is greeted with suspicion. Ward's saga is a modern version of the 1980s blockbusters about the wealthy and dissolute, but the characters are surprisingly likable as they struggle to get their troubled house back in order. The twists and turns may be implausible, and the amount of money the Baldwines throw around is jaw-dropping, but this series is the definition of a fun, escapist summer read.
