Follett continues his Kingsbridge series, exploring the religious fanaticism of both the Protestant and Catholic factions that tore apart sixteenth-century Western Europe. Elizabethan England serves as the novel's backdrop, with its religious reforms and the promotion of tolerance, but each character's journey reveals the dangers that promoting tolerance in an age of violence presents. Veteran actor and narrator Lee admirably voices a diverse set of characters in a staggering array of accents: Dutch, British, French, Spanish, German, Scottish, and more. His voice lilts upward for the female characters, and on occasion, this seems inauthentic compared to his rich male voices. However, Lee's pacing is impeccable, especially in action-packed scenes, in which he performs every characters' dialogue with short breaths imitating their swashbuckling action, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats. A must-listen for lovers of Follett's other novels but also for those with a keen interest in suspenseful historical fiction. Follett returns to the fictional West Country town of Kingsbridge. It is 1558, and Mary Tudor is not long for this world. Her death unleashes a battle between Catholics and Protestants that dominates this novel, which is set primarily in England and France across five decades. Ned Willard, a moderate Protestant, battles the forces of religious extremism as he works as a spy for Queen Elizabeth I. John Rafter Lee brings a modulated, English-accented sensibility to this story. His character voices add extra vitality to the narration but don't overpower it.
